Dreams Afar Exhibition

Dreams Afar

Exhibition: July 3rd - Aug 4th

Travel inspired artworks

The Dreams Afar exhibition features art inspired by travel and culture.  The artworks include drawings of African safari animals, screen prints of everyday life in rural India and portraits of Sri Lankan workers, oil paintings of Japanese kimono, and a watercolour of Spanish flamenco. The featured artists include: Rebecca Hawkins; Natasha Kumar; Chitra Merchant; Jamel Akib; Veronica MacKinnon; Rennie Pilgrem; Marisa Cyd; Bryony Cox and mosaics by Antonella Scarpa-Isles.

Chitra Merchant and Natasha Kumar both draw on their own Indian heritage to inform their artworks of rural life in India or historical temple sites. Rebecca Hawkins uses charcoal to delicately show the swirl of sari’s surrounded by gold leaf and block-print emblems

Meet the Artists event!

Thank you to everyone who came to the “Meet The Artists” event on Saturday in conjunction with the “Psyche, Dreams & Spaces” exhibition. Artists Toni Cogdell and Antonella Scarpa-Isles were in the gallery to discuss their work. The wine flowed and the afternoon whizzed by! Here are some of the photos:

Ethereal Portraits by Toni Cogdell

Oil painter Toni Codgell works out of her studio in Bristol, set amidst trees in a small woodland near her home. When viewing the paintings grouped together on a studio visit recently, Toni’s ethereal style became amplified by the prolific volume of her work. The muted colour tones work well with each portrait eliminating a dreamlike quality, the fluid visible brushstrokes showing the confidence with which she works.

Ribbons by Toni Cogdell

Ribbons by Toni Cogdell

Toni expresses her work as "meandering across the territory of the Human Condition, exploring the constant dialogue, contrasts and tensions between the lives we lead and the lives we feel, our outer and inner worlds, the spaces between the parts. Exploring our individuation as well as our innate connections to nature, time and ultimately to each other. Telling the story of us from the inside out, through painting”.  It’s no wonder the images evoke a spiritual resonance and each portrait tells a story, a story you want it to be

We can’t wait for next month when we’ll be showing Toni’s oil paintings here at Gallery & Barrow in Bath.  Come and see the rich quality of work by this young talented artist and decide which portrait you like best.  The portraits are available in a  variety of sizes
