Dreams Afar Exhibition

Dreams Afar

Exhibition: July 3rd - Aug 4th

Travel inspired artworks

The Dreams Afar exhibition features art inspired by travel and culture.  The artworks include drawings of African safari animals, screen prints of everyday life in rural India and portraits of Sri Lankan workers, oil paintings of Japanese kimono, and a watercolour of Spanish flamenco. The featured artists include: Rebecca Hawkins; Natasha Kumar; Chitra Merchant; Jamel Akib; Veronica MacKinnon; Rennie Pilgrem; Marisa Cyd; Bryony Cox and mosaics by Antonella Scarpa-Isles.

Chitra Merchant and Natasha Kumar both draw on their own Indian heritage to inform their artworks of rural life in India or historical temple sites. Rebecca Hawkins uses charcoal to delicately show the swirl of sari’s surrounded by gold leaf and block-print emblems

New work

It’s always fun when a new batch of artwork arrives from an artist, and opening the bubble-wrap feels like Christmas. This week we had two such deliveries, with new work from Chitra Merchant and Anna Harley. Both prolific screen printers, it’s always a delight when they turn up at the gallery with new images to show. Time for a Tuesday re-hang!  Here some of the screen prints we now have ready to exhibit:

Cityscapes and dreaming spires... the works of Chitra Merchant

Chitra Merchant’s work is strongly influenced by Indian culture and many of the Temple series feature dreaming spires of dilapidated temples situated in front of a large glorious sun where you can almost feel the heat beating down on the vista, or in the foothills of distant evocative mountains.  They have a dreamy quality to them, evoking wistful travels.

Shores 3: Screen print by Chitra Merchant

Chitra specialises in screen printing and etching which she teaches at the infamous Spike Island Studios in Bristol, UK. Lately Chitra has been working on a new series called Hinterland, which delves into derelict and overlooked urban spaces, creating her own “temples” from these wasteland areas. Chitra’s illustrative drawing techniques are the starting point from which these temples transform into etchings or screen prints
