Once again we were thrilled with the delightful entries we received for our quarterly competition. The theme this time was “Butterflies, Birds & Bees” and we seem to have received a wide variety of styles and subjects.  One painting even included all 3 - well done Sam Brett-Atkin!

Hang About!

Unique figurative oil paintings on old wood, have just arrived at the gallery and we love them! Cool, edgy, innovative art on rustic wood - exactly what we crave here at Gallery and Barrow. These artworks are the result of a dedicated creative career - A BBC hair & make up artist and trained wig maker by trade, painting, drawing & making have been intertwined in Sally Whelan's day to day life since she was a child.

“Dangle” by Sally Whelan

Sallys paintings provoke a feeling of curiosity from the viewer. Her work has strong narrative and bold composition. A witty charm and well observed sense of humour blends uniquely with a hintingly dark undercurrent.  "I mainly work with oil paints on a combination of canvas, collaged old maps, and found bits of wood. Things like rusty street signs and industrial gas tap flaps are popping up more and more in my work these days too. I like an unusual surface...and a challenge!"

“Jump” by Sally Whelan

I paint because it gets the feelings out. If i could sing, or write songs, play music or articulate myself properly I would...but painting just seemed to sort of "happen" along the way. I'm totally self taught so it all happened very naturally, and now I just feel physically wrong if I dont do it."

"Bodies, people, the hidden shades and depths, from the inside out, a fabric that is always changing. Never predictable, always challenging and something I feel compelled to depict."

Swing by the gallery to see them in the flesh!

Ethereal Portraits by Toni Cogdell

Oil painter Toni Codgell works out of her studio in Bristol, set amidst trees in a small woodland near her home. When viewing the paintings grouped together on a studio visit recently, Toni’s ethereal style became amplified by the prolific volume of her work. The muted colour tones work well with each portrait eliminating a dreamlike quality, the fluid visible brushstrokes showing the confidence with which she works.

Ribbons by Toni Cogdell

Ribbons by Toni Cogdell

Toni expresses her work as "meandering across the territory of the Human Condition, exploring the constant dialogue, contrasts and tensions between the lives we lead and the lives we feel, our outer and inner worlds, the spaces between the parts. Exploring our individuation as well as our innate connections to nature, time and ultimately to each other. Telling the story of us from the inside out, through painting”.  It’s no wonder the images evoke a spiritual resonance and each portrait tells a story, a story you want it to be

We can’t wait for next month when we’ll be showing Toni’s oil paintings here at Gallery & Barrow in Bath.  Come and see the rich quality of work by this young talented artist and decide which portrait you like best.  The portraits are available in a  variety of sizes

New work

It’s always fun when a new batch of artwork arrives from an artist, and opening the bubble-wrap feels like Christmas. This week we had two such deliveries, with new work from Chitra Merchant and Anna Harley. Both prolific screen printers, it’s always a delight when they turn up at the gallery with new images to show. Time for a Tuesday re-hang!  Here some of the screen prints we now have ready to exhibit:

Gallery Launch Party

Although we’ve been open for a few months already, we finally got round to holding the Gallery & Barrow launch party! It turned out to be great night, the wine flowed, lots of people came and the small gallery was full of smiley visitors. Thank you to the artists who managed to swing by, including Jacqueline Byrne, Otto & Elena, Mark Thomas, Anna Harley and Heloise O’Keefe. Thank you for helping with the bar, Roman and Emma and thank you BathLife magazine for covering the event. Many guests even came from afar including Bristol, Portishead and Salisbury.

We held an art raffle and the prizes included two lovely screen prints by Anna Harley and Sarah Targett, greetings cards by Nick Cudworth and Clare Cutts, a wooden easel, handmade papers and canvasses.  Well done to the winners!

Thanks for a great evening. We look forward to seeing everyone again at the gallery soon!

Don’t forget if you’d like to join our newsletter to hear about other events and news happening at the gallery,  email: studio@galleryandbarrow.com

Bravo Anna Harley

Well done to Anna Harley for selling over 20 prints at the Affordable art fair in Hampstead! It seems her series on trees is a particularly popular subject matter for the residents of Hampstead, plus they are absolutely beautiful screen prints of course, with subtle tones and a few soft metallics thrown in. We just love them - I think we need a re-stock!

Hampstead AAF 2017

Inspiring, fun and exhausting. What a blast The Affordable Art Fair in Hampstead was this year.  We thoroughly enjoyed it. The fair was busy with people and we managed to find happy homes for 33 of our lovely pictures. Filling your walls with gorgeous artwork is what we are all about.  We’ve received some delightful emails from happy customers including one from a man who surprised his wife with a pretty screen print of sweet pea on silver leaf by Clare Cutts. His wife was also at the fair so we had to do the sale secretly without her realising.  Thank you Serge at AKArtAsia and Hannah Ludnow @ Columbia Rd Gallery for your help, advise and friendly cups of tea and prosecco! Here are some photos from the fair

Gallery in Bath opening soon!

Gallery & Barrow are about to open in Bath UK! Our address will be 118A Walcot St, Bath, BA1 5BG. We are opposite The Bell pub!

Well after 3 months of renovation and hard work, there is finally light at the end of the tunnel! The original shop has been split into two and we are taking one half of it - number 118A. We have sanded back the floors, added in new track lighting and picture rails, repainted and installed a kitchenette into the basement amongst other things.

The new artwork is being delivered as we speak and we’re starting to hang for the first time.  We have yet to paint the exterior and to add the name of the shop.  Here are some work-in-progress photos. We should be open in just over a week, so please do come and visit us soon!

Studio Visits: Artist Anna Harley

It’s always a joy to go on a studio visit to see where an artist works and all their prints in one place. This week Screen Printer Anna Harley opened her studio doors and inside was an Aladin’s cave of fabulously ordered screen prints. Having seen work online it’s sometimes a wonderful surprise when artwork in the flesh looks even more breath-taking

Anna Harley graduated from UWE with a Masters Degree in Printmaking, specialising in Screen print, and is now an active member of Spike print studio in Bristol. Anna uses a combination of drawing, digital photography and objects directly exposed on the screen, to create the individual layers in the prints

Mendip Hinds by Anna Harley

While so many screen printers are tempted to use bold, bright colours, we love the muted tones of Anna’s work. Anna’s talent combines fine art and design and is a happy crossover between the two.  Anna recently exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and The Mall Gallery in London, ArtEZ Institute of the Arts (AKI), Enschede, Holland and The Victoria Art Gallery in Bath. It’s really worth viewing these in the flesh though, to get the full appreciation of the subtleties in the work. Come find us at the Hampstead art fair in May or in the Bath gallery space in April (details coming soon!)

Art Fairs 2016

As 2016 draws to a close, I thought I’d mention a few of our favourite images from the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea and Bristol this year.  2016 saw a real increase in contemporary mixed-media art at the Bristol show this year compared to last year,  and the Battersea show was incredible as usual, with really inspiring works of art. Here are a few faves:

Bringing collectors and artists together

It’s a joy when a collector is searching for a piece of art and an artist is looking to sell and the two click like a jigsaw puzzle falling into place. That’s exactly what happened recently when a collector friend of mine asked me to help her source a piece of art for her flat in Los Angeles. Having become familiar with the LA art scene while living there for 6 years, I was instantly able to make a few suggestions.  My friend loved the work of established artist, Emma Ferreira, who I suggested, and we trotted off to meet Emma at her studio

Although born in England, Emma Ferreira now lives in LA . Her work received much attention recently, when it was auctioned at Christie's Beverly Hills. It continues to be sold to private estates, corporate collections, and galleries throughout the world. http://www.emmaferreira.com

My Collector friend chose this gorgeous mixed media photographic piece to hang in her flat

Since moving to New York recently, the piece of art now sits, pride of place in the NY apartment. It’s so wonderful when collaborations like this just fall into place

American Art Collector Magazine

Many of artist, Mike Weber’s new series features images of animals from the American West. Some of Mike's images are currently being shown in a group show “The Snow Show” in Denver, Colorado, showing visions of winter.  Weber’s mixed-media image “Ego” from the show, depicting a large bear, was featured in American Art Collector Magazine this month (bottom right image)

Screen print Targett

We’re delighted that Sarah Targett has joined our roster.  Sarah is a screen print whiz kid and works full time as an Artist and screen print dynamo at Marshfield Screen Print Studios.  Sarah studied fine art at Falmouth School of Arts in Cornwall. Living in the countryside around Bath, her beautiful illustrations often depict nature she see’s around her, particularly birds, and often her designs convey a sense of humour and cheekiness.

The Sandwich Thief by Sarah Targett

The Sandwich Thief by Sarah Targett

The process of screen printing is a labour-intensive and slow technique. First the image is designed or hand-drawn before being embedded onto a mesh by shining a UV light onto a light-sensitive emulsion. This hardens the image onto the mesh and the rest of the emulsion is washed away. Paint colours are then pulled through the mesh in different layers, one colour at a time. It’s a messy and intense job but well worth the fun and we just love these limited editions and can’t wait to see more
